Our History
History of Kingston Reid
Kingston Reid was named after Charles Kingston and George Reid - both founding fathers of Australia’s workplace regulation framework.
Charles Kingston was one of the key figures involved in drafting the Australian Constitution and the establishment of the Australian Parliament. He was also a key drafter of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act 1904, which has existed under many guises since that time, underpinning Australia’s regulation of the world of work.
George Reid was a lawyer, Premier of NSW and then Prime Minister of Australia who secured the ultimate passage of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act in December 1904, following a tortured path which brought down two Prime Ministers and the drafter, Charles Kingston, in its wake.
The regulation of our workplaces, which has evolved since the passing of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act in 1904, is unique. Just like us. From the debates of Kingston and Reid, the laws that cover employment, unions, discrimination and workplace safety were born.
